  about workshops

Each year the Providence Children’s Film Festival offers children (and their parents) opportunities to learn firsthand technical skills used in filmmaking. This year two local animators, Annie Lavigne and Amy Lovera, return by popular demand to lead workshops in the basics of stop motion and cut paper animation. Stay tuned for other opportunities to learn about fillmmaking through PCFF.

For more information about upcoming workshops, please contact ProvKidsFilm@gmail.com.

Come learn the technique behind the quirky and fantastic animations of Monty Python's Flying Circus! This stop-motion technique uses flat backgrounds and puppets made from 2D materials, like paper and photographs. In this intensive 4-hour workshop, students will make a short animation where they are the main characters in a fantastic world of their creation! We will learn how to make jointed paper puppets and animate under the camera. For inspiration, we will watch several animated films which use the cut paper technique in innovative and unique ways.

Students should bring: 5x7 photograph of yourself to cut up and make into a jointed puppet (keep in mind you will be cutting this up!), magazines, patterned scraps of paper, bits of fabric, other photographs or interesting things to cut-up. A snack.

About the Instructor:
Amy Lovera is a Providence-based artist whose work explores the interplay between biography and fiction. Working primarily in between photography, animation and drawing, she has recently been awarded grants by LEF Foundation and by Rhode Island State Council of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited and published both nationally and internationally. Amy holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art. She is currently a faculty member in the Animation department of the Massachusetts College of Art and in the Visual Arts department of Roger Williams University.
